Data set: (UKDS SN 28)
This data set comprises an SPSS saved file and exercises created in 1975 by Dr Annette Scambler, Sociology, Surrey for teaching undergraduates. The full original data set was supplied by RSL on multipunched 80-column cards. It was retrieved and fully restored in 2014 by John Hall, who also created a new SPSS saved file and some of Annette's exercises. The restored files have been deposited with UKDS.
New Report
Relative Deprivation and Social Justice Revisited (2 July 2021, pdf, 50pp)
This paper reports on:
1: Retrieval of data from a national survey conducted by the late Prof. Garry Runciman[1] in Great Britain (1961-62).
Book: W G Runciman
Relative Deprivation and Social Justice (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1966)
Fieldwork: 1962-63, Research Services Ltd (RSL)
2: Creation of an SPSS *.sav file containing all original variables.
3: Retrieval and restoration of a reduced data set created by Dr Annette Scambler at the University of Surrey and used for teaching Sociology undergraduates.
SN28 Commentary on Relative Deprivation and Social Justice (August 2014: pdf, 42 pp)
This is a bit too long and I am going to break it up into smaller sections. Following intensive exploration work this document was originally written in four sections April-May 2014 with major additions in August.
It may it seem repetitive and over-detailed, but it illustrates the way an experienced survey researcher and SPSS user approaches SPSS *.sav and *.sps files, particularly when dealing with SPSS syntax and raw data from 80-column Hollerith cards (including multi-punches) dating from half a century ago, and from a social research perspective.
SN28 Appendix 1 - Download of original data from UKDS (pdf, 6 pp)
SN28 Appendix 4 - Annette Scambler's 1975 version (pdf, 6 pp)
Further appendices for SN 28 were planned:
Data errors and recodes
Recovery of data from a binary file.
Restoration of, and modifications to, the distributed SPSS *.sav file (including *.sps files used.)
Recreation of Annette Scambler's exercises
Development of new examples, homework exercises and provision of specimen answers.
Most of the planned content is now covered in:
Relative Deprivation and Social Justice Revisited (pdf: 55pp, 2 July 2021)
