Opinion polls
[New page 15 Nov 2015: updated 16 Nov 2015]
Companies conducting regular polls in the UK, and publishing their results themselves, or via the media, include ICM (for the Guardian) ComRes (for the Daily Mail) (Ipsos-Mori (for the Daily Telegraph) Opinium and .Yougov . Most such polls are conducted via telephone or the internet and as such their results cannot always be treated with the same confidence as surveys using probability samples.
In the case of elections, polls can sometimes get things spectacularly wrong, as in the USA in 1948 (Dewey/Truman) and the UK in 1970 (Heath/Callaghan) and 2015 (Cameron/Miliband)

UK Polling Report regularly summarises recent polls and has a menu of links to many other sites. It also archives its blogs.
The British Polling Council (BPC) is an association of polling organisations that publish polls. The objectives of the Council are to ensure standards of disclosure that provide consumers of survey results that enter the public domain with an adequate basis for judging the reliability and validity of the results. Through full disclosure the Council aims to encourage the highest professional standards in public opinion polling and to advance the understanding, among politicians, the media and general public, of how polls are conducted and how to interpret poll results. The BPC will also provide interested parties with advice on best practice in the conduct and reporting of polls.
In the USA the National Council on Public Polls (NCPP) is an association of polling organizations established in 1969. Its mission is to set the highest professional standards for public opinion pollsters, and to advance the understanding, among politicians, the media and general public, of how polls are conducted and how to interpret poll results.in the USA.
