Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM)
The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is the nation's oldest and largest program offering graduate training in the principles and practices of survey research. Founded in 1993, it is sponsored by the Federal Interagency Consortium on Statistical Policy and located at the University of Maryland. To date, it has more than 220 graduates working in government agencies, academic settings, and private survey research firms. Its award-winning faculty is drawn from the University of Maryland, the University of Michigan, Westat and other organizations.
JPSM's mission is to educate the next generation of survey researchers, survey statisticians, and survey methodologists. To that end, we offer a Ph.D. program, an M.S. in survey methodology, and certificate and citation programs. We also offer a program of short courses and a Summer Fellows program for undergraduates.
Ph.D. in Survey Methodology
Designed to equip its graduates with the knowledge and skills to create new methodologies for the collection and analysis of quantitative data, our Ph.D. program allows you to work with an advisor to create a plan of study tailored toward your interests.
M.S. in Survey Methodology
The master's program is meant for students wishing to pursue a professional career in survey methodology or for those who are looking to learn new statistical and methodological designs they can use in their future research. Maryland also offers undergraduate training through:
Junior Fellow Program
The Junior Fellow Program is a unique internship experience that gives you a paid research assistantship, plus educational benefits that can expand your horizons of what you can do in your career
Minor in Survey Methodology
The Minor will help students aspiring to have careers in fields such as marketing, political consulting, economics or the social sciences that rest on the collection and use of survey data by providing them with a firm understanding of survey design and data collection..

Michigan Program in Survey Methodology (MPSM)
The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology, established in 2001, seeks to train future generations of survey methodologists. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.
Doctor of Philosophy in Survey Methodology
The primary training goal of the program is to prepare students for a career in research, academic, private, or government, by helping them to develop their own research programs during their training. We expect that by working with a range of faculty in research projects, students will be exposed to a broad range of survey methodology issues. Formal course requirements are thus limited to provide sufficient time for research and to allow students to elect courses that meet their specific interests in the field.
Many academic and non-academic careers involve teaching and mentoring. A secondary goal of the PhD training is to help students develop teaching and mentoring skills. Teaching experience during the program will include serving as a Graduate Student Instructor for several semesters. Students are also encouraged to attend workshops in the University's Center for Research on Learning and Teaching
Master of Science in Survey Methodology
The Masters degree course requirements cover four areas: statistical methods, practica, survey methodology, and a cognate area. The specific courses a student will take are determined through discussion with the student's faculty adviser. Flexibility in course election is allowed, although each Masters degree candidate must complete courses, or have requirements waived, in each of these four areas.
Certificate in Survey Methodology
The Certificate program is designed for graduate students in departments other than the survey methodology program. While not required, it is preferred that students be enrolled in a graduate degree program at the University of Michigan or another graduate institution, or have completed a Masters or PhD within the last 5 years to be eligible to receive a Certificate in Survey Methodology.

Survey Research and Methodology Program (SRAM)
The SRAM program trains students on the best innovative practices in the collection and analysis of regional, national, and international survey data. As an interdisciplinary program, we have expertise in the social, behavioral, health, marketing, and statistical sciences. We offer MS and PhD degrees and a Certificate Program. We also offer MS and PhD minors for students enrolled in other UNL graduate programs. Financial support is available with MS and PhD graduate research assistantships.
