Professional and voluntary associations
Listed below are some of the main professional and voluntary associations dealing with survey research and survey analysis.

ASSESS (SPSS users)
ASSESS is an independent user group for SPSS, a computer package for analysing and presenting data. It is run by users, for users. The group is currently centred on the United Kingdom where it holds an annual conference and other events, but we have had many members from other countries over the years.
Social Research Association (UK)
The SRA plays a unique role as an organisation open to social research practitioners and trainees from all sectors, as well as others with an interest in social research. The SRA provides a forum for people working in a diverse range of settings and in different subject specialities, to form wider contacts, exchange views and information, and pursue issues of common concern. This website tells you all about the SRA, SRA Ireland, SRA Scotland and SRA in Wales (SRA Cymru). It gives details of all the SRA activities including our training days, conferences, evening seminars and other events.
The Research Network
Founded in 2002 THE RESEARCH NETWORK is an association of senior market and social researchers who have spent all or the majority of their working lives in these activities. We currently have just over 250 members. The Network exists to facilitate social networking, both face-to-face and online by:
- organising social events at least three times a year,
- publishing a twice-yearly Newsletter and
- maintaining this website in order to provide up-to-date news for members, to encourage online networking as an adjunct to face-to-face meetings and to contain full archives of past activities.
- Note that current membership of the MRS is not a prerequisite of membership although nearly 60% of present members, around 250, are Associate, Full or Fellow members of the MRS; although most of our members are retired many work part-time and some are still working full time.
European Survey Research Association
The European Survey Research Association has been established to provide coordination in the field of Survey Research in Europe. Through our activities we encourage communication between researchers. Important activities include our biannual conferences on survey research and the publication of a European journal on survey research.

American Sociological Association
The American Sociological Association (ASA), founded in 1905, is a non-profit membership association dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline and profession serving the public good.

The ASA has a proud tradition of service to statisticians, quantitative scientists, and users of statistics across a wealth of academic areas and applications.
There is a specialist Survey Research Methods Section whose misson is to promote the improvement of survey practice and the understanding of survey methods by encouraging both theoretical and applied research on survey-related topics and by disseminating information on survey methods. Areas of interest for the Section include all that employ survey methodology as a focus or as a prime tool of investigation.

American Association for Public Opinion Research
AAPOR was founded in 1947 by a group of dedicated public opinion research pioneers. In the main, AAPOR occupies itself with professional matters: Public Opinion Quarterly, which became the official journal in 1948; professional standards; and above all, advancing research theory and methodology. NCPP National Council of Public Polls
The National Council on Public Polls (NCPP) is an association of polling organizations established in 1969. Its mission is to set the
highest professional standards for public opinion pollsters, and to advance
the understanding, among politicians, the media and general public, of how polls are conducted and how to interpret poll results. Since its inception, NCPP has sponsored seminars, workshops and press conferences in Washington and New York to promote better understanding and reporting of public

World Association for Public Opinion Research
WAPOR was founded in 1947 by a group of experts and scholars interested in promoting and improving public opinion research all over the world. For more than half a century, WAPOR members have worked together and with others, especially journalists who report on public opinion, to maintain high standards for the collection, analysis and dissemination of public opinion data.

British Psychological Society
The British Psychological Society is the representative body for psychology and psychologists in the UK. The Society has national responsibility for the development, promotion and application of psychology for the public good, and promotes the efficiency and usefulness of its members by maintaining a high standard of professional education and knowledge.
British Polling Council
The British Polling Council (BPC) is an association of polling organisations that publish polls. The objectives of the Council are to ensure standards of disclosure that provide consumers of survey results that enter the public domain with an adequate basis for judging the reliability and validity of the results. Through full disclosure the Council aims to encourage the highest professional standards in public opinion polling and to advance the understanding, among politicians, the media and general public, of how polls are conducted and how to interpret poll results. The BPC will also provide interested parties with advice on best practice in the conduct and reporting of polls.
