Courses in Applied Social Surveys (CASS)
University of Southampton
CASS is a programme of short courses in applied social surveys for academic social scientists and applied researchers in government, market research and the independent and voluntary sectors. They are run by the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) at the University of Southampton and is part of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM).
The programme covers topics in survey design and implementation, survey sampling, data collection and data analysis methods. The courses aim to provide guidance and workshop practice for researchers who face practical survey tasks and decisions, such as how to draw a sample, how to design a questionnaire and how to analyse a data set. Teaching is interactive and all courses include practical sessions or computer workshops to enable participants to put the learned methods into practice.
The programme includes courses on:
• Questionnaire Design (by Dr Pamela Campanelli)
• Survey Data Analysis I: Introducing Descriptive and Inferential Statistics (by Dr Olga Maslovskaya
and Dr Amos Channon)
• Survey Data Analysis II: Introduction to Linear Regression Modelling (by Dr Olga Maslovskaya
and Dr Amos Channon)
• Applied Multilevel Modelling (by Dr Ian Brunton-Smith and Dr Gabriele Durrant)
• Designing Effective Web Surveys (by Prof Mick Couper)
• Regression Methods (by Dr Nikos Tzavidis)
• Essentials of Survey Design and Implementation (by Dr Pamela Campanelli)
• Structural Equation Modelling (by Dr Katy Sindall)
• Longitudinal Data Analysis (by Prof Peter Smith, Dr Ann Berrington and Dr Marcel Vieira)

Research Methods Short Courses
Centre for Longitudinal Studies, Inst. of Education, London
CLS runs a series of courses aimed at social researchers working in a range of settings, including central and local government and elsewhere in the public sector, as well as to other students interested in researching policy. These courses form part of the MSc in Policy Analysis and Evaluation, but can also be taken as stand-alone courses as part of continuing professional development.

United States
Several universities in the USA offer short courses in survey methods. Questionnaire Design for Social Surveys is a new Massive Open On-line Course (MOOC) . A test version was run in July-August 2014 and future timings are listed on the site. The course was created at the University of Michigan by faculty from the University of Michigan’s Michigan Program in Survey Methodology (MPSM) and the University of Maryland’s Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) . The course is on-line, free to join, lasts six weeks and requires 4-6 hours of study per week.
