Institute for Social Research (University of Michigan)
Founded in 1949, the University of Michigan (ISR) is the world's largest academic social science survey and research organization. For more than 60 years, the Survey Research Center has been a national and international leader in interdisciplinary social science research involving the collection or analysis of data from scientific sample surveys. There's a special 60th anniversary report detailing the origins and history, listing key personnel (names to conjure with!) and research milestones.
SRC offers an annual Summer Institute on Survey Research Techniques.
